PAST
The first year I was married, my husband took a football coaching position in a small mountain community. The population of the town was lower than the altitude. I think the town had slightly more than 1000 residents and the altitude was slightly less than 8000 feet. This, in all probability, was one of the worst years of my married life. I expected a husband who was occasionally home; instead, I was married to a coach with his first head coaching opportunity. I suppose it wouldn’t have mattered whether he was a coach or a banker—whatever the career—he was driven to succeed. The only person I knew was a young woman with whom I worked in the town’s utility office. She did not like me at all. Just before Christmas, my sister and her husband came to visit and the exceedingly expensive wood steering wheel on his Mercedes froze and shattered in the frigid cold. I awoke one morning to find that the sheet had frozen to my chin because we had run out of propane the night before. All these events combined to create in me a frenzy of despair. I pleaded with my husband to FIND A DIFFERENT JOB! By the grace of God, a friend of his called and did offer him a better job. So that spring…no, let me correct that…spring in most other parts of the country, we left the lovely little mountain community behind. Of course, we left in a raging snowstorm.
PRESENT
There are so many times when I wish that God had programmed a “do-over” time. I can’t begin to say how often I would have taken advantage of something like that. But, really, “do-over” is a hindsight type of reaction. From the perspective of my advanced age, I have learned that God expects us to exercise “foresight.” There is nothing wrong with a review of one’s past, but it must lead to foresight. Where am I going, and what am I going to do when I get there? Obviously, I can’t determine an exact answer to those questions, but I can get a general idea of what the Lord wants and know that he will fill in the details. All this is by way of saying that I probably won’t blog again until October, because we are getting ready to move. We are going home to Texas! What am I going to do in general?? God willing, I am going to make more friends than I did here, I am going to love them more, and I am going to share God’s word with as many people as I can. That is the general idea. I trust that God will fill in the particulars. “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:6).
RECIPE
Spiced Tea
1 cup of Tang orange flavored drink
½ cup of Lipton instant tea
½ teas. cinnamon
¼ teas. cloves
Mix all of these ingredients together and pour into a large canning jar. You can add other ingredients if the urge strikes you—apple pie spice, nutmeg, etc. Just whatever suits your taste buds. When you are ready to use this, add a couple of heaping tablespoons to a mug of hot water. If it is too “spicy” add a touch of sugar. Very versatile little recipe.
I don’t know where I found this recipe so it is hard to give credit to anyone. However, I will give credit to Cindy for the fact that you are receiving this recipe—she packed all my recipe books.
Note from Cindy - Yes I did!!!! All 52 boxes of them!
